#LoveMaineWaters Island Cleanup Registration

Join us in Owls Head on Wednesday, September 24

#LoveMaineWaters partner organizations will team up with Maine Coast Heritage Trust for a day of shoreline debris removal on two MCHT preserves: Ash Island and Sheep Island. We will be departing Richard Carver Harbor Park in Owls Head at 8:30am and will return at approximately 2:30pm before continuing on to McLoons Lobster Shack in South Thomaston for a post-cleanup celebration from 3-5pm. We would love to have you join us for this special day of community and stewardship! Boat transportation will be provided by MCHT and Maine Island Trail Association. Advance registration is required at the bottom of this page.

Below is all of the information you’ll need for having a great day with us:

Overview: We will gather about 10 minutes before launching to review the plan for the day. Skiffs driven by experienced MCHT and MITA volunteers and staff will shuttle participants out to Ash Island and Sheep Island where staff will lead volunteers in collecting trash on the islands. We will break for lunch before returning to Owls Head around 2:30pm. We will head to McLoons shortly after we return.

MITA’s Liability Waiver:

A link to MITA’s waiver can be found here. Please fill it out and submit prior to the trip if you have not volunteered with MITA before. Volunteers should be physically fit, comfortable with getting in and out of small skiffs, and able to move on slick, uneven shorelines.

What to bring:

PFD: If you do not have a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, contact us at stewards@mita.org as MITA has some we can supply.

Clothing: Even if the forecast calls for sun, it can always get cool and wet on the water, so make sure to bring sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen as well as rain gear (top & bottom) and warm, non-cotton layers for the boat ride.

Footwear: You’ll want sturdy, closed-toe footwear that can get wet. Rubber rain boots with good traction work especially well.

Lunch/snacks and drinking water: Bring something to eat, but be sure to save some appetite for McLoons!

Work gloves

Pocket knife for cutting line (serrated works best!)

Insect/tick repellent

Small backpack for keeping your lunch/water with you on the island
