This Aleutian Baidarka Skin Kayak was built in 1998 and has only had 1 owner. The kayak is 18ft long and weighs about 30 pounds. It was built based off the plans by Wolfgang Brink’s book called “Baidarka.”
This kayak is in perfect condition and can be paddled or be artistic piece hung up for display in a home or business. The hand painted artwork on the top sides is beautiful.
The larger frame members are Sitka spruce, and the ribs are a type of willow. There are not any nails or glue used in the construction. All of the joints are lashed with artificial sinew. The “skin” is Dacron fabric, sewn onto the frame. The Dacron fabric was sealed with a clear sealant. The designs were painted on. There is a piece of ash wood that made up the hoop of the cockpit. There is also a piece of stainless steel in part of the bow for additional support. The wood was stained to give the appearance of the inside of an animal, which was typical of Aleutian boat construction. There is a special abrasion resistant strip of plastic that runs along the keel to protect the fabric in that area. It is the same material that they install on the edges of helicopter blades.
