Stewardship

The dictionary definition of stewardship is “the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” The stewardship of Maine’s wild islands is one of the pillars of MITA’s mission and serves as our primary guiding principle on the Maine Island Trail. Each island and mainland site on the Trail has stewardship needs and through volunteer leadership and support we are able to meet those needs and ensure exceptional management of the places that have been entrusted to our care.
MITA’s stewardship services consist of monitoring the use and environmental conditions of the islands, performing island cleanups and work projects, maintaining infrastructure such as signs and island logbooks, and reporting to property owners and to the public on island health and recreational use trends.
