Boating Safety
Maine’s coast can be a magical place for small boating, but don't let its beauty lull you into a false sense of security. Every year, the voyages of at least a few small boaters turn disastrous when they are caught unprepared for the conditions they face. Planning ahead is the key to staying safe on the water. Here is some basic information to help you plan a safe and enjoyable trip on the Maine coast.
Develop strong boating skills:
- Become proficient at marine navigation
- Know some basic knots
- Practice good boating etiquette
Carry appropriate nautical charts:
- If your local marine supply store does not have the area you need, contact West Marine, Hamilton Marine, or DeLorme
Locate launch sites:
- The Delorme Mapping Company's Maine Atlas and Gazetteer provides very detailed road maps and lists boat launching areas, as well as the names of many of the larger islands. The Gazetteer is available online or through many bookstores and outdoor equipment retailers
Know tide and weather predictions:
- National Weather Service forecasts for the Maine coast
- Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System provides hourly data from 12 Maine coast buoys
- Tide Predictions from NOAA
Be prepared for the unexpected:
- Check out the list of required Coast Guard safety equipment for all recreational boats
- Learn how to prevent hypothermia, one of the biggest threats for small boaters, with proper clothing and in-water survival techniques
- Be sure someone on the mainland knows your plans
